Here's how aquariums in
Vastu can help you earn good karma

In both Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, keeping an aquarium at home creates a flow of abundance

If you visit a temple in India, or a Buddhist monastery, chances are that you will stumble on a lotus pond in the vicinity. Temple ponds allowed devotees to cleanse themselves before they entered a sacred space or quenched their thirst after a long pilgrimage.

The water element itself is considered a potent symbol of purification in many cultures. As Feng Shui and Vastu Shastra evolved in tandem with vernacular architecture, the temple pond transformed into the humble aquarium.

In Hinduism, Matsya the fish is the first avatar of Lord Vishnu who saved Manu, the primeval man, from a flood that would have eradicated mankind. In Vedic astrology, Meena is Pisces who can transform turbulent cosmic tides into safe waters. “Due to its totemic associations, feeding fish daily can earn you good karma,” says Shilpa Khurana, a Delhi-based Vastukar.

“Aquariums in Vastu are the ultimate abundance tool because there is an interaction of all the five elements. The air pump keeps energy flowing, dispelling any stagnation in prana,” she continues, saying that a fish tank can eliminate most Vastu defects.

Best Directions

Ideally, aquariums in Vastu are always placed in the south east of the living room as it improves socialization skills, attracts kin and friendship. Place it in the north, east or north east, if you are looking for financial profits and career growth.

Fish Tank Placements

Place the aquarium where it can be displayed to public. In an office, you would place it at the reception to invite opportunity, and at the front door in a residence, to attract friendship. “Place it at your love corner, if you’re actively dating, or at your wealth corner if you need more money,” Khurana says.

Placing it on the left side of the main door can sustain love in a marriage, but placing it on the right side may tempt a spouse to seek out an extra-marital affair. Never place it in the centre of any space as it will financially drain you, or in the bedroom as it will give you vivid dreams.

Lucky Fish

Goldfish are eponymous to Feng Shui and fishpond, and Matsya is believed to have fins that were gilded in gold. Other choices include discus, angelfish, arowanas and even dither fish like schools of tetras and rasboras. Avoid predatory fish like oscars, sharks, and piranhas as they aren’t considered good omens

Water Plants

“Don’t just toss in a few glass pebbles and a sunken shipwreck,” Khurana laughs. Create a biotope using a base of river sand, driftwood, and lots of underwater plants like anubias, water lilies or java ferns and floating plants like water lettuce, azolla, mosaic plants, and so on. If you have a green thumb, a water garden can be an extension of your coveted indoor plant collection

The Shape of Glass

Always choose a round or rectangular aquarium, in a shape that is easy to clean. “Triangular aquariums look chic and are in vogue, but the triangle is the elemental symbol for fire, thus is unlucky,” Khurana says. Centrally-located pillar aquariums are problematic as well because they cause financial instability.

“When a fish dies a natural death, it is said to have taken on some misfortune that could have affected the family and should be replaced immediately,” Khurana concludes.
